Moment to absorb it all
- by Ben Kerry
This week, Microsoft unveiled a rather modest Xbox Game Pass update featuring only three new additions to the lineup – which is reasonable given that we’re scheduled to reveal more titles during an Indie Showcase next week. Nonetheless, despite the limited offerings until the event occurs, one title in this latest selection possesses some of the most remarkable open worlds we have encountered on Xbox Series X|S thus far – and it is truly worth experiencing.
With its 2020 installment in the series, Ubisoft transported its DedSec team to London in Watch Dogs Legion – and we still believe this is among the most intricate, diverse, and well-crafted open-world games of this generation. Not all of Legion’s changes landed successfully – but its portrayal of the UK’s capital is an exceptionally impressive achievement.
What is most noticeable right from the start is that this is not at all a pristine open world with tranquil landscapes and sun-drenched terrains – Legion’s London is a gritty, lived-in environment brimming with near-constant graffiti, numerous pothole-ridden streets that clearly need some serious municipal attention, and the presence of some rather dubious characters hanging around on most corners. You could certainly say that Ubisoft Toronto understood the task at hand.
There is beauty in this type of worn-and-tattered world. Upon loading the game once more after a significant hiatus, we found ourselves pausing frequently just to absorb everything. There is such meticulous detail in what Ubisoft has crafted here that we can’t help but appreciate it – and navigating London’s tight streets and quirky one-way systems remains an exhilarating thrill, even after four or five years.
Having mentioned this, Watch Dogs Legion is not strictly a game that sticks to contemporary realities – there are plenty of nods to futuristic sci-fi elements throughout – fitting for the series’ overarching theme. If you appreciate a touch of fictional flavor in your open-world games, Legion certainly delivers, skillfully blending these elements and mechanics with an authentic representation of London that we’ve come to genuinely appreciate over time.
In any case, this grand former Ubisoft adventure arrives on Xbox Game Pass next week on February 25th, and for those who might be yearning for an intricately detailed open world to explore – Watch Dogs Legion remains a superb showcase for Xbox Series X|S.
