Elden Ring Movie: A Glimpse into the Future According to Game of Thrones Creator
Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin has emphasized that there’s “some conversation” about a potential Elden Ring film, although his participation is primarily limited because he is “several years overdue” on his latest novel.
The author provided lore and worldbuilding for FromSoftware’s narrative and was queried by IGN whether he would come back for a possible Elden Ring sequel.
Instead, he reiterated that a film is uncertain. “Well, I can’t reveal too much about it, but there is some discussion regarding the making of a movie based on Elden Ring,” he stated.
The dilemma lies in the ongoing issue of Martin’s next novel—the long-awaited sixth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series – The Winds of Winter—which serves as the foundation for the Game of Thrones television series. Infamously, the TV series concluded the storyline before Martin could finalize the ending of his own narrative.
“Unfortunately, I am 13 years behind schedule,” he mentioned to The Hollywood Reporter last year. “Every time I state that, I think, ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens one day at a time.”
Until the novel is completed, it seems that his potential involvement in an Elden Ring film will be limited.
“We’ll see if [the Elden Ring film] materializes and what my role might be; I’m not sure,” he shared with IGN. “I’m several years behind with my latest book, which also restricts the amount of things I can undertake.”
This is certainly not the first occasion Martin has hinted at an Elden Ring film being in development.
“Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard regarding a feature film or television series based on Elden Ring…” Martin wrote in a blog post last year. “I have nothing to add. Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you didn’t hear a whisper from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?”
Even FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki has expressed his openness to a film adaptation—just not from him.
“I see no reason to oppose another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a film, for instance,” he mentioned to The Guardian last year. “However, I don’t believe myself, or FromSoftware, possess the expertise or capacity to create something in a different medium. Therefore, we would need a very strong partner involved. We would require a solid foundation of trust and cooperation concerning what we aim to achieve, but there is certainly interest.”
Martin also indicated to IGN that there are additional worldbuilding elements that could be included in a future installment. “Yeah, I believe especially when you’re constructing a world, there’s always more that you can display on the screen,” he stated.
“And that holds true for any of these grand epic fantasies. If you consider Tolkien, there are countless pages of historical background before you even reach the period of The Hobbit and dozens of
