Nintendo Launches Subsidiary in Taiwan to Strengthen Local Gaming Industry

Nintendo recently established a new subsidiary office in Taiwan, which is set to commence operations starting April 1.

According to a translation of the developer’s Hong Kong website, the office located in Taipei aims to “further bolster the business foundation in the Taiwanese market and enhance service quality [for our] customers. [We] will embody the business principles of Nintendo Group, and continue to foster business growth.”

This subsidiary will mark Nintendo’s first office in the region in over ten years. Its previous outpost in Taiwan, Nintendo Phuten, was closed in 2014 after the company downgraded its annual forecast due to weak Wii U sales. Operations were subsequently moved to Nintendo Hong Kong.

Nintendo Switch 2 is on the verge of release

As highlighted by NintendoLife, Nintendo has recently made a move to reestablish itself in Taiwan’s gaming sector, appearing at 2024’s Taipei Game Show with a dedicated Nintendo Switch booth.

On April 2, the day following Nintendo of Taiwan’s operational launch, the company will host a livestream event focused on the Nintendo Switch 2. The developer has previously expressed optimism that this new console will compensate for the recent sales downturns of its predecessor and avoid any production challenges when it is finally launched later in 2025.

After the unveiling of the Switch 2, Omdia analyst James McWhirter told Game Developer that the firm expects the console to sell approximately 14.7 million units during the 2025-2026 calendar year. Establishing a presence in every conceivable market, Taiwan included, would pave the way toward achieving (or exceeding) those expectations.
