“Ms. Marvel Kamala Khan Embarks on a Time-Spanning Adventure to Reimagine Mutant History in Honor of X-Men’s 50th Anniversary”
Marvel is marking 50 years since the 1975 debut of the iconic Giant-Size X-Men #1 with the launch of a series of Giant-Size one-shots in an event that the publisher promises will “transform mutant milestones” – featuring the return of a long-forgotten “X-Man that never was.”
Authored by current NYX writers Colin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, the five one-shots will cover the most significant narratives in X-Men history, including Giant-Size X-Men #1, Days of Future Past, Age of Apocalypse, and the Dark Phoenix saga, which Marvel claims will reveal “mysteries long hidden and secrets that will shape the future of Marvel’s mutants.”
The journey commences with a unique Giant-Size X-Men #1 penned by Kelly and Lanzing, illustrated by the legendary X-Men artist Adam Kubert. The following one-shots will feature artists yet to be announced. Regarding the plot, it appears that none other than Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel will be taking a time-traveling adventure through some of the most pivotal moments in X-Men history.
Additionally, each one-shot will include a so-called ‘Revelations’ backup story crafted by
“X-Men creators from both past and present” that uncovers lost secrets and hidden truths behind classic X-Men lore, featuring a tale by writer Al Ewing and artist Sara Pichelli in Giant-Size X-Men #1 that introduces the aforementioned “X-Man that never was.”
Below is a gallery of unlettered interior pages from Giant-Size X-Men #1, along with the cover of the one-shot:
“No exaggeration: every issue of GIANT-SIZE is destined to astonish you and tug at your heartstrings,” Lanzing and Kelly, who refer to their writing group as “the Hivemind,” assure in a press statement.
“Mutantkind is the most expansive, grand canvas in the Marvel universe – plus, it’s the one the Hivemind has been debating and celebrating since our teenage years at our local comic shop,” Lanzing and Kelly continue. “Now, alongside the legendary Adam Kubert and three more of the finest artists in the industry, we’re ready to completely dismantle and recreate the history of the X – with our favorite hero Kamala Khan taking the spotlight. It’s a privilege, a delight, and a tremendous responsibility. Free Comic Book Day is merely a preview. What follows will be extraordinary.”

Does this imply that all of X-Men history will be altered to position Kamala Khan as the retroactive superstar of the entire saga of mutantkind? Well, possibly not – despite the phrasing that might suggest otherwise.
That being said, Kamala will indeed be at the forefront of the narrative, which may also reveal her still unknown mutant abilities, which have remained dormant following the revelation that in addition to being Inhuman, she also possesses a mutant X-Gene.
In addition to the interior pages and cover for Giant-Size X-Men #1, Marvel has released a lineup for the one-shots, which includes hints at what each will feature.
Here’s the lineup, followed by descriptions for each one-shot:
Giant-Size X-Men #1: “Witness the initial fracture in history as Kamala Khan is drawn into the X-Men’s past.”
Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1: “A new discovery about Jean Grey’s fate may alter everything.”
Giant-Size Age of Apocalypse #1: “Reality is bending. Is this the world Apocalypse was always destined to dominate?”
Giant-Size House of M #1: “Mutants reign supreme…but at what cost? Kamala must confront Magnus.
