Mouthwashing, undoubtedly one of the most intensely frightening horror games I’ve ever experienced, is exiting its Steam exclusivity and will be available on consoles this year.

In a Steam announcement, the developer Unfriendly Organ disclosed that the game has sold 500,000 copies on Steam, setting the stage for a digital and physical release on PS5 and Switch.

If you haven’t come across Mouthwashing yet, I highly recommend checking out my colleague Leon’s excellent review of its philosophical exploration of mortality and acceptance, or our detailed article on its unexpected success last year. I’m here simply to inform you that it will be available on consoles in 2025.

If you’re still with me, know that Mouthwashing is an intensely disturbing game, and I mean that genuinely. It presents a stark, gritty, low-poly existential dilemma centered on the ill-fated crew of a lost spacecraft. It tackles profound subjects like suicide, cannibalism, and alcoholism. It may not be particularly enjoyable, but it is deeply thought-provoking and fulfilling in its own way if you can make it through its three-hour campaign.

Mouthwashing isn’t for everyone, and to be honest, in today’s world, I’m not entirely sure how I perceive it. Much like how I regard A24 films, Mouthwashing isn’t a game I would choose to experience more than once; nor did I find particular enjoyment in playing it at all, though I’m glad I did. I would much prefer to play Resident Evil Village for the third time, just as I would rather watch The Invitation for the hundredth time before re-watching Midsommar, but both games and films have their rightful places in their respective spheres.

Anyway, there isn’t a specific release date yet for Mouthwashing on console—just that it will arrive sometime in 2025.
