Almost six years after its launch, Xbox’s Chief of Gaming Phil Spencer has confirmed that Rare’s enigmatic deer adventure Everwild is still in development.

Despite being initially announced in late 2019 with a breathtaking teaser, followed by another appearance in summer 2020 featuring a slightly more revealing trailer, we have heard very little about the game since.

While conversing on the XboxEra podcast, however, Spencer had optimistic news for fans concerned that the game might have been quietly canceled, indicating that the team has been making “progress”.

“I recently visited Rare. It’s gratifying to witness the team working on Everwild and the advancements they’re achieving,” Spencer mentioned when asked to reflect on which first-party games currently in development he was most excited about (thanks, VGC).

“It has been [some time]. And we’re in a position to allow these teams the time they need to do what’s right and still have a portfolio like we do.

“It’s akin to a dream that Matt [Booty] and I have envisioned for many years, so it’s truly gratifying to be there. We can provide those teams with the time they need.”

Earlier today, we reported that in the same podcast, Spencer stated he’s “not trying to move [PS5 and PC players] over to Xbox anymore”, recognizing that gamers are “all so invested in where our games are,” and that his focus now is to “allow more players to access” Xbox games on various platforms.
