Monster Hunter Wilds producer Ryozo Tsujimoto has recognized the importance of the PC platform and the rationale for including crossplay in the game.

“Indeed, there are more players than ever involved in PC gaming, even in Japan,” Tsujimoto remarked to GamesRadar. “Therefore, we certainly envision an opportunity for the series to attract new players who haven’t experienced it yet, should that be their preferred platform.”

Crossplay functionality between PC and console players has been implemented in Monster Hunter Wilds, allowing players to decide “which platform they prefer to play on and then [they can easily] go online and hunt alongside their friends.”

This is likely a reason why Capcom released the Monster Hunter Wilds PC benchmarking tool, enabling gamers to evaluate their systems prior to release.

The vast audience for the game is evident when examining SteamDB. The beta for Monster Hunter Wilds achieved a peak of 463,798 concurrent players, compared to Monster Hunter World which peaked at 334,684, and Monster Hunter Rise which hit 231,360.

In comparison, the beta test’s peak surpasses that of Helldivers 2, Among Us, and Grand Theft Auto 5.

Speaking of GTA, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick recently addressed the anticipated PC release of GTA 6, mentioning that traditionally “Rockstar has launched their titles on some platforms initially and then expanded to other platforms over time”.

“We have witnessed PC evolve into a significantly more crucial aspect of what was once a console-dominated business, and I wouldn’t be surprised to observe this trend carry on,” he added.

Square Enix is also actively pursuing an “aggressive” multiplatform strategy, planning to release their major titles on PC after PS5 exclusivity, further emphasizing the importance of PC for Japanese companies. Both Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16 are currently available on PC.

In another interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds director Yuya Tokuda talked about the possibility of introducing a fifteenth weapon type to the game.

“When we initiate the development of titles like World and recently, Wilds, we always consider whether it’s the right time to introduce another weapon type,” Tokuda explained. “It is not dismissed for any specific rationale; it simply reflects that we haven’t reached a decision to include one for the new installments.”

Given all the adjustments and modifications made to the existing 14 weapons in Wilds, it is essential to identify “a 15th weapon that would genuinely fit in that assortment and feel just as valid as the other weapon types while also not overlapping excessively with them”.

Monster Hunter Wilds is set to launch for free on February 28 across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
