Unveiling Tomb Raider: A Deep Dive into the Critics’ Perspectives on Remastered Editions 4-6
Another trio of classic Tomb Raider games arrives on Xbox today for the very first time – with The Final Revelation, Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness forming the new Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered collection developed by Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics.
As you might have noticed, we shared our Pure Xbox assessment earlier today – highlighting that these fresh-to-Xbox Tomb Raider games “are deserving of a spot in your library” in our 7/10 rating of the collection.
Therefore, we’ll include a link to that review below, along with some brief insights on what other reviewers are saying about Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered so far.
Eurogamer (4/5)
“It’s a peculiar position to leave Lara. We experienced so much alongside her in the Core games, and here she stands now, dressed in double denim, positioned outside a warehouse in Paris, kicking a dog in the head while a helicopter hovers overhead. These three titles may not always present Lara Croft at her finest, but they have been treated with care as if they were, which is what an effective remaster should accomplish. In certain instances, as is typically the case with this series, they still shine.”
Press Start (7.5/10)
“While there are significant visual enhancements and some nice new additions, the reality is that these games don’t quite match the strength of the original trilogy. Nonetheless, regardless of your feelings, it’s hard to argue that Aspyr has done commendable work here, providing an accessible way to indulge in games that many dedicated fans would consider underrated or misunderstood.”
Pure Xbox (7/10)
“Though The Last Revelation is the only title here that I’d deem a classic, both PS1 era entries are still enjoyable, particularly now that Aspyr has allowed us to experience them with original graphics at 60FPS. Despite being the most recent title, The Angel of Darkness has aged the poorest and serves as a clear reminder of why the franchise shifted to a new studio post-release. Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered’s escapades may not be indispensable, but they’re certainly worthy of a spot in your library as this chapter of Lara Croft makes her Xbox debut.”
Gaming Bolt (7/10)
“Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is nearly everything fans could desire. All the great quality of life features from I-III return here, alongside new restored content for Tomb Raider VI. While this remaster doesn’t wholly resolve the issues with the series’ outlier, Tomb Raider VI, it significantly enhances the experience. Similar to the first collection, IV-VI Remastered offers tremendous value for what you receive and is a must-have for fans of the franchise or classic gaming.”
Tech Radar (3/5)
“Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered presents a delightful visual refresh to The Last Revelation, Chronicles, and The Angel of Darkness, with outstanding character models, intricate textures, and improved lighting working together to fantastic effect. The contemporary control configurations across the collection can be frustratingly unwieldy, yet some valuable quality-of-life improvements and the superb photo mode features make this remaster essential for long-time aficionados.”
Checkpoint Gaming (6/10)
“Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is entertaining, but there are numerous other action-adventure titles that simply excel more. If you appreciate what Tomb Raider has delivered thus far, you should enthusiastically dive into this trilogy.
