Just a few days into its Kickstarter campaign, Dark Sea creator Failbetter’s Fallen London tabletop RPG adaptation has exceeded its crowdfunding objective, garnering over half a million pounds.

Fallen London, in case you aren’t familiar, is a free-to-play browser-based narrative adventure that has been gradually expanding since its launch in 2009. At its core is an alternate-universe rendition of Victorian London that was taken by bats and transported to a vast underground cave deep beneath the Earth’s surface—the heart of a darkly whimsical world that Failbetter has revisited in three standalone titles: Dark Sea, Dark Sky, and Mask of Rose.

All three of these games originated as Kickstarter campaigns, but for its latest crowdfunding effort, Failbetter is trying something a bit different. Collaborating with Magpie Games, it is stepping away from digital formats to finance an officially licensed tabletop roleplaying game set in the Fallen London universe.

As a Kickstarter project, there are various stretch goals and reward tiers, but the crux of the campaign includes the Fallen London roleplaying game Core Book and the Guide to London supplement. Together, players can access all the rules, setting elements, story hooks, character types, conflicts, dilemmas, and dynamic mechanics—along with a sample ‘adventure’—that they might need as they embark on their journey through the expansive Neath.

There is undoubtedly much more depth to the Fallen London tabletop RPG than can be captured in a single paragraph, and there’s plenty more information (including a video walkthrough) on its crowdfunding page. And what is present is clearly striking a chord with potential backers; the campaign has already surpassed its $50K funding goal—raising over $626K, or just above half a million pounds—at the time of writing, with 28 days still to go.
