Anthony Mackie Envisions a Future of Fun as Captain America for the Next Decade
Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson is back in action this week in Captain America: Brave New World, and according to the actor himself, he believes he can carry the legendary shield for another ten years.
In a conversation with Screen Rant, Mackie shared his reasoning behind taking on the role of the shield-wielding hero and believes a decade will suffice. “The ten years start on the 14th. That’s it. After the 14th I’ll have a 10-year run. I’m not looking to be a 60-year-old Captain America. That would be tough.”
Mackie, at 46, officially took on the role of Captain in the finale of Falcon and the Winter Soldier after Steve entrusted Sam with the shield at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame. Even back then, he was uncertain about it, initially
The next phase of Sam’s journey as the star-spangled hero will see him unearth a conspiracy involving a celebrated war hero and the newly instated president, Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford). However, that won’t be the only challenge he faces. Also joining the fray is Giancarlo Esposito as Sidewinder, and Tim Blake Nelson, who is expected to reprise his role as Samuel Sterns, aka The Leader, after we last saw him in The Incredible Hulk back in 2008.
With such a significant list of challenges to tackle during his first cinematic outing as Cap, Mackie remains excited about his alter-ego’s ability to handle it all, just like his predecessor—especially on the big screen, as opposed to the small. “I believe there’s something about Captain America that resonates with people; they love the essence of these movies, the tone, the authenticity, the grounded nature of them,” Mackie explained. “It fits perfectly in a cinematic environment, and I think Captain America deserves to be on the big screen because that’s where fans want to see him.”
