
The Unseen Plans: Inside Insomniac’s Vision for Resistance 4 and Sony’s Decision to Shun It

It has been more than 14 years since developer
Ted Price – who announced his retirement last month after over 30 years at Insomniac – discussed this during an appearance on the Kinda Funny Gamescast. When asked if he had a favorite proposal the studio had made over the years – a “one that got away” – Price revealed the Resistance 4 revelation.
“We did pitch that project,” he disclosed, “and it was a fantastic concept… It stemmed from a lot of Insomniac team members being enthusiastic about continuing the narrative further… I truly believe that Resistance has laid a really interesting alternate history foundation where anything could unfold with the Chimera, their journey, and their origins. We dedicated considerable time to developing the lore and brainstorming potential future directions.”
Regrettably, Sony could not be persuaded, with Price citing “timing and market opportunity” as reasons for the project’s failure to progress beyond its proposal. The exact timeline of these events is unclear based on Price’s remarks; however, a review of past records reveals he told Eurogamer that the studio was “not slated” to develop Resistance 4 all the way back in 2011. One year later, Price was ready to draw a definitive line under the series, stating, “We will not be making any more Resistance titles.”
While this has proven to be the case so far, Price mentioned to Kinda Funny that he would love to see a revival of Resistance, describing the series as “Near and dear to my heart.”
“When you invest a long time working on a franchise,” he explained, “it’s fulfilling to have the chance to explore new projects. At the same time, it’s also rewarding to potentially return to it. Fortunately, as [Insomniac is] part of Sony and Sony holds the intellectual property for Resistance, we will always have that chance to revisit Resistance.”
Yet while fans might feel disheartened to learn of Resistance 4 that almost came to fruition, Price remains philosophic. “I strongly believe everything happens for a reason,” he shared with Kinda Funny, “and when I reflect on the games we’ve created – those that were well-received, those that weren’t, and those we didn’t get to develop –
