It’s devoted. Robert Eggers is a truly exceptional director after the iconic filmmaker Martin Scorsese lauded his latest journey to Transylvania with Nosferatu.

While speaking to TCM’s Dave Karger about his career and the films that have influenced him, both past and present, Scorsese expressed his fondness for horror. Karger inquired if the Goodfellas director had seen Eggers’ latest vampire film, echoing sentiments that critics and audiences have already shared about the movie. “It’s fantastic. Whatever this guy creates, fantastic. And that’s one [film] you don’t easily forget after watching. You’re still immersed in that world. You’re in Transylvania, and it’s really, [laughs] whoa. Man, he’s exceptional.”

In recent years, Scorsese has been quick to appreciate a genre he hasn’t truly explored deeply. Films like Cape Fear, Bringing Out the Dead, and Shutter Island have all featured subtle elements of horror, yet it seems he prefers to allow others to terrify us within the cinema seats. One notable horror film that caught his eye in the last decade was Hereditary, which Scorsese labeled in a Q&A session in 2019 as “Disturbing, there’s no question, it’s a horror film in that sense. But it’s more than that. It reminds me of the finest horror movies.”

Hopefully, after Eggers’ encounter with Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård), Scorsese will be among the first to watch the Nosferatu director’s upcoming horror film, Werwulf.
