To be honest: as someone who tends to be quite slow, there are certain games that I secretly wish aren’t my forte, because if they end up being my forte, I’ll have a miserable time trying to explain how they function. The issue here is that those games which are most difficult to describe are often the most captivating. These are the games where you feel a kind of peculiar duty to find the right words for them, enabling you to share with others just how special they are.
Anyway, let’s talk about Lok. Lok is fantastic. It is a puzzle game focused on uncovering new terms and then spelling them on a grid. Terms like LOK, TLAK, and TA. Each of these terms possesses unique abilities, and this is where things become intricate.
Your mission in Lok is to turn every tile on the grid black. If there’s a word you can spell—an in-game term like LOK, TLAK, or TA, for example—you can black out those tiles simply by spelling it. However, these words grant powers that allow you to black out additional tiles. LOK enables you to black out one extra tile. TLAK, I believe, allows you to black out two tiles, but they must still be connected? TA, which I’ve recently unlocked, well, I think TA lets you black out all instances of the tile you select. I believe this is how these words function—I’m still in the process of testing theories with all of them, and this is the type of game where figuring out how everything operates is part of the enjoyment.
Maybe I’ve made it sound straightforward. Well, it’s definitely not easy to play. The challenge lies in the fact that when you are faced with a grid, you typically have a limited selection of words you can spell right away, so much of the game revolves around discovering the correct order to spell them.
This order is important because once a tile is blacked out, it’s as if it no longer exists. So if you have LOAK, you cannot use it to spell LOK; however, if you black out the A, you can spell LOK. The game …
