Sony has submitted a DMCA takedown request concerning a fan-developed Bloodborne 60 frames per second patch nearly four years post its release.

Bloodborne is a beloved action RPG from From Software that is only officially available on PS4, operating at a frame rate of 30fps. In 2020, Lance McDonald unveiled a 60fps patch for Bloodborne that he had been working on, which was made publicly accessible on February 21, 2021. While players had to take extra measures, such as jailbreaking their PS4, to benefit from this patch’s enhancements, it quickly gained popularity as a substitute for an official enhanced PC and PS5 version of Bloodborne from Sony.

Sony has allowed this fan-made patch to exist for almost four years, but it is now no longer accessible. McDonald announced on X (formerly Twitter) on January 31 that he complied with a request from Sony to remove any links to their 60fps Bloodborne patch. This has made the process of locating and downloading the 60fps Bloodborne patch significantly more complicated than it previously was.

On February 21st, 2021, I created and released a patch for Bloodborne that allows the game to run at 60fps. Today, I received a DMCA takedown notice on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting that I remove links to the patch I posted online, so I have now done so.

The reason for Sony’s delayed legal action against this 60fps patch remains uncertain. While many fans, including Kai Cenat, have requested PC and PS5 ports of Bloodborne, Sony has not publicly indicated that it intends to do so. Recently, the company engaged fans of Bloodborne by displaying images of the FromSoftware title alongside the phrase “it’s about persistence” in its video celebrating the 30th Anniversary. If you wish to play Bloodborne, the PS4 version is included in the PlayStation Plus Extra game catalog.
