“Prince of Persia: Misplaced Crown Achieves 1.3 Million Copies Sold Within Its First Year”
According to a now-removed LinkedIn profile (and viewed by Bogorad222), Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has sold 1.3 million copies since its release in early January 2024.
Alexandre Guenounou, a marketing director at the company, described the action-platformer as a “multi-award-winning title” that reached this milestone within its first year. The game debuted on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, PC, and Xbox One and Series X|S, receiving favorable reviews.
However, Ubisoft has been vague regarding the details of The Lost Crown’s commercial success. Shortly after the game’s release, they suggested it did not achieve targeted sales, but acknowledged that it played a role in revitalizing the previously inactive franchise.
Guenounou’s report shows that sales have improved since its launch, likely boosted by appearances on various “Best of 2024” lists and receiving multiple nominations for its gameplay and accessibility features.
Prince of Persia’s troubled throne
Late last year, French journalist Gautoz reported that the The Lost Crown team at Ubisoft Montpellier was disbanded after unsuccessfully pitching both a sequel and a couple of expansions for the game. One expansion was approved for development alongside three free updates, after which the team was reassigned to other projects, such as Dead Cells 2 at the same studio.
Developers who spoke with Gautoz reportedly referred to The Lost Crown as “the best project of my career,” and some hoped that this team could help rejuvenate those worn out from Dead Cells 2.
Besides The Lost Crown, there are two additional Prince of Persia games in development: Horrible Empire’s The Rogue Prince of Persia, which is set to release in May 2024 as an Early Access title, and a remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The latter was revived as of May 2023, and is primarily being developed by teams in Ubisoft’s Montreal and Toronto studios.
