Research firm Ampere has unveiled some intriguing statistics regarding the month of December in gaming—stats that reveal Microsoft as the top publisher globally for the final month of 2024. According to the analysts, $465 million was invested in Xbox games last month, securing Microsoft as the leading publisher across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.

As anticipated, Call of Duty significantly influenced that consumer expenditure. The debut of Black Ops 6 has been crucial for Microsoft, with the COD HQ platform attracting 38 million users in November last year, likely followed by a remarkable December for the franchise as well.

Interestingly, 64% of the aforementioned Microsoft earnings figure was allocated to PlayStation platforms, with Black Ops 6 being the main contributor to that percentage. We discovered late last year that the Xbox to PlayStation split for Black Ops 6 heavily favored the Sony system, so that statistic may not be surprising here.

Ampere also observes that mega-publisher EA generated approximately $366 million during the same timeframe last month, indicating a significant decline from Microsoft’s figure. Similar to Call of Duty for Xbox, EA Sports FC 25 was the primary reason for EA achieving such results.

Considering all this, it increasingly makes sense why Xbox would release its top titles on other platforms, particularly following its substantial acquisitions of Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. COD evidently earns substantial revenue on PlayStation, and with Nintendo platforms likely to gain attention when Switch 2 launches, we’re curious to see how these figures evolve in the coming years.
