It’s a true statement

When Astro Bot debuted in September 2024 for the PS5, many praised the game’s excellence and compared it favorably to some of Nintendo’s most iconic 3D platformers.

During the Recent York Game Awards 2025 ceremony, the former president of Nintendo of America shared his thoughts on the game after it received the ‘Best Children’s Game’ accolade, humorously stating, “I must confess, Astro Bot nearly surpassed Nintendo at its own game.”

It’s a bit of a lighthearted remark, considering everything, yet it undoubtedly delighted us. We particularly enjoyed the emphasis on the word “nearly”; after all, we find it hard to believe that Reggie, of all people, would straightforwardly acknowledge that a game from another platform could potentially outshine one of Nintendo’s own creations.

All attention will undoubtedly be on Nintendo in the upcoming months as we approach the launch of the recently announced Switch 2 console. It’s been quite a long while since Super Mario Odyssey was released on the Switch back in October 2017, so many – us included – are curious about what Nintendo has in store for the next 3D mainline installment.

Astro Bot also went on to win the coveted ‘Game of the Year’ award at the same event in New York, adding yet another trophy to Team Asobi’s impressive collection of accolades.

What do you think, dear reader? Does Astro Bot come close to Nintendo’s finest achievements in the 3D platforming genre? Share your thoughts with us in the comment section below.
