Nintendo has ceased its commercials from being broadcast on the regional Fuji Television (Fuji TV) amid an ongoing scandal involving Masahiro Nakai, regarded as one of the area’s top hosts.

According to reports by Nikkei (credits to Automaton), a 90 million yen ($569,000) out-of-court settlement occurred in December 2024, following allegations that Nakai — also a former member of the immensely popular boy band SMAP — had sexually assaulted an unidentified woman in 2023 during a company-sponsored dinner.

Nintendo is joining approximately 50 companies that are boycotting the channel, including major brands like Nissan and Toyota.

Although initial reports did not directly prompt companies to start withdrawing commercials, a subsequent press conference by Fuji TV led many to charge the network with a lack of transparency and accountability. Fuji TV President Koichi Minato also stated that the company was aware of the incident over six months before the reports emerged but chose not to make it public.

Nakai released a statement in January declaring that the “trouble” stemmed “entirely from my shortcomings”. Fuji TV has since reportedly engaged outside attorneys to investigate the scandal.
