TikTok Ban Impacts Popular Mobile Games in the US: What It Means for Gamers

Update, January 21, 2025: The developer 2d Dinner has revealed that Marvel Snap is back online in the US after the fallout from the TikTok ban.
The studio announced via social media that it intends to “bring more operations in-house and collaborate with a new publisher” to prevent this situation from occurring again.
According to players, the studio explained that in-app purchases remain unavailable in the US and that efforts are underway to restore the game to app stores.
Original report, January 20, 2025: Marvel Snap and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang were rendered “temporarily” unavailable in the US due to the TikTok ban over the weekend.
The developer 2d Dinner expressed on social media that both it and its publisher Nuverse, a division of TikTok owner ByteDance, were “surprised” to find out that Marvel Snap was impacted by the ban.
“Regrettably, Marvel Snap is temporarily unavailable in US app stores and cannot be played in the US,” the developer stated. “Marvel Snap isn’t going away. We are diligently working on restoring the game as soon as possible.”
2d Dinner has subsequently updated players, stating they “hope to have Marvel Snap back online within 24 hours” while assuring “global players should be able to continue playing without problems.”
The California-based studio also reassured players that it is “dedicated to making sure all players are compensated” for missing out on “time-sensitive content, rewards, and missions.”
