Unveiling the Secrets: Exploring Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s Concept Art and Hidden Characters
Film will be available digitally the day after tomorrow.
Conceptual artwork for the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film has been revealed, disclosing omitted content and a glimpse at hidden characters from the post-credit sequence.
These images are from Chinese creators at Tian He Yan Studio, shared earlier today on Weibo (beware of potential movie spoilers!).
Interestingly, the images were released a day prior to the film’s digital availability, just a month after its release in theaters.
“This time, we primarily contributed to the design of several keyframes and some character models,” stated the post from Tian He Yan Studio. “The keyframe concept art aids in establishing the film’s tonal style, and can also help direct the visual effects work.”
Many of the images illustrate pivotal moments from the film. There’s a scene featuring Shadow and Maria together, Eggman watching a telenovela, Sonic and Shadow battling at home, as well as that charming Chao Garden restaurant sequence.
However, there is more to uncover. Knuckles and Tails are depicted riding a bike through the streets of London, pursued by a giant ball of debris, reminiscent of something from the Katamari games, suggesting it was intended to be a cut action sequence. Another image showcases the three Sonic heroes airborne as they escape some form of sand explosion, with Knuckles covered in scorpions.
Two images stand out in particular, showcasing both Amy Rose and Metal Sonic. These characters are hinted at in the film’s post-credit scene – it remains uncertain from this artwork whether they were originally intended for this film, or if this artwork was created solely for their appearances.
In either case, this could hint at what to expect in the confirmed film sequel, Sonic 4. Amy, for example, is seen standing over Sonic just as she does in her classic portrayal, although there’s a massive destroyed robot that is not the Metal Sonic we recognize in Sonic 3. What exactly is happening in the background?
Another image features Metal Sonic alongside Eggman, dressed in some kind of emperor attire against a futuristic city backdrop. This was certainly not part of Sonic 3, and fans speculate it may depict a sinister future. If correct, it could align with theories suggesting the next movie may be inspired by the time-traveling Sonic CD.
If you haven’t yet tried to watch the film, or wish to experience it once more, it will be available digitally the day after tomorrow (January 21).
Last week, the animator behind the film’s low-poly credit sequence detailed its creation, including the design process.
