A fresh report from Eastern exchange publication Diamond On-line has provided a list of companies with the highest average yearly salaries in Western Japan for FY2024, and Nintendo ranks right among the top contenders (thanks to Automaton).

According to the report, Nintendo offered an average annual salary of 9,627,000 yen in the last fiscal year (approximately £51,000 / $62,000 at the current exchange rate), placing the company with the second-highest average salary in the region — and it stands out as the only entertainment company to make it to the top five, no less.

This comes even though the typical Nintendo salary decreased in FY2024, with the report indicating a 2.3% drop in compensation compared to the previous year. Diamond On-line suggests that this reduction reflects Nintendo’s decline in net sales and operating profit in FY2023, although it notes that both of these metrics experienced an increase in the subsequent fiscal year — so we anticipate a turnaround in the next report, we wager.

Semiconductor manufacturer Screen Holdings was recognized with the highest average annual salary for the last fiscal year, with Diamond On-line reporting an average paycheck of 10,248,000 yen (£54,000 / $66,000).

It should be noted that these rankings specifically focus on Japan’s western Kansai region (excluding Osaka), and companies with fewer than 20 employees have also been excluded from the list.

With 2025 set to be the year of the Switch 2, Super Nintendo World Orlando, and possibly a host of additional surprises, it will be intriguing to see how fortunes change for the Big N this year and just how significantly the staff benefit from the company’s success.
