Fortnite‘s partnership with Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse has brought Godzilla and King Kong skins to Fortnite, but this event is not solely about skins–it also includes the opportunity for one player per round to become Godzilla. And by “become Godzilla,” I mean you’ll likely tower over the tallest buildings in Seaport City, capable of smashing structures and altering the map by stepping on them or unleashing Godzilla’s laser breath.

It’s somewhat similar to how the playable Doctor Doom functioned during Chapter 5 Season 4, but you may find yourself even taller than the colossal Doom was. However, the mechanics of how this works can be a bit intricate the first few times you encounter them–while there have been previous Fortnite events that were somewhat similar to this Godzilla event, the way it actually operates is entirely new. So, let’s break it down step by step.

You too can become Godzilla in Fortnite right now.
You might become Godzilla in Fortnite right now.

The mechanics of becoming Godzilla in Fortnite

At present, each match of battle royale and Zero Build has a 40% chance of generating a rift that allows the first player to pass through to transform into a massive Godzilla that can unleash a deafening roar, a tremendous stomp, and a powerful (and yes, pungent) laser breath attack. The rift will appear approximately three minutes into the match and will display an icon on everyone’s map indicating its location. However, you cannot rush into it immediately; all players are alerted about a minute prior to its availability. This ensures that the Godzilla feature does not automatically go to the nearest player when it spawns—it gives others a fair shot, too.

There’s no reliable way to predict when Godzilla will appear, but when he does show up, there is a 25% chance that King Kong will first appear at the start of the match, dropping additional Monarch-branded supply crates–you will likely be able to spot him quite easily from the battle bus when this occurs, making him hard to miss. Just remember: Whenever Kong appears, he will be followed by Godzilla in the same match, but Kong will not show up in every match that features Godzilla. Most of the time, Godzilla appears without Kong. A more consistent approach would be preferable, but Epic likely does not want players to drop out of matches too early over and over until they land in one with Godzilla, which some might do if given the chance.

Once you or another player has transformed into Godzilla, you can maintain that form for up to ten minutes—the health bar will begin depleting automatically.
