2025 is set to be a remarkable year for role-playing games. Some of the most beloved RPG franchises are set to introduce new installments, alongside remakes of timeless classics, and exciting new concepts that might grow into their own franchises. RPGs have become an incredibly diverse genre in recent years, incorporating a wide range of narratives and mechanics. This means that whether you’re looking for a epic fantasy tale, a far-off sci-fi adventure, or just the chance to establish a home and thrive in a game world, there will be something for you to enjoy this year.

This year’s lineup of RPGs arrives at a pivotal moment for the industry as well. Nintendo is poised to launch the Switch 2, which could offer a new portable-hybrid platform for games that will not run well on the older Switch. The Steam Deck and other handheld PCs are ready to directly compete with the capabilities and reach of the Switch. Additionally, Microsoft and Sony, on their respective console systems, are increasingly making their games more accessible—Sony often ports its games to PC while Microsoft is allowing its titles to release on both PC and PlayStation. This could influence some of our most awaited RPGs by providing a broad array of options when it comes to where and how we experience our games.

For a lot more of this year’s expected launches, check out our 2025 release dates list and mark your calendars for the upcoming year. It is poised to be a magnificent one. And be sure to explore our selections for the top RPGs to play right now for plenty more recommendations.
