You are undoubtedly guaranteed an excellent time when Crew Ladybug and WSS Playground join forces, so the developer’s upcoming cyberpunk Metroidvania title, Blade Chimera, instantly captured my interest. It’s now available on Steam and Nintendo Switch this Thursday, January 16, according to co-publisher Playism’s website, and there’s a demo available now. I gave it a try and quickly fell back in love with that signature Crew Ladybug style, so I believe I know how I’m spending my weekend.

Crew Ladybug is recognized for Metroidvania successes like Touhou Luna Nights and – I’m particularly fascinated by this – Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth. Those hyphens are very important, folks. WSS Playground typically plays a supporting or publishing role, but they have a keen eye for video games; you might also know the company from titles like Xemono’s Needy Streamer Overload or the more recent Boyhood’s Dream from Buriki Clock.

Blade Chimera is undoubtedly reminiscent of Touhou Luna Nights and Record of Lodoss War, but its science-fantasy ambiance and refined pixel art really stand out. You take on the role of a demon hunter named Shin, paired with a sentient sword spirit called Lux, as you wield a remarkably extensive array of firearms and talents to navigate what undeniably resembles a post-apocalyptic Osaka, Japan.

Shin has approximately three Resident Evil-sized suitcases filled with increasingly elaborate weapons stashed away somewhere, but Lux is arguably the true protagonist due to her ability to create objects, provide cover, enhance platforming, and fulfill a wide range of utility functions. I’ve only gathered so much from the demo and trailers, but it’s already clear that there is significant potential depth to progression, and the game feels rich so far. Crew Ladybug has really nailed it.

The Metroidvania gods have answered my prayers with this horror title that seems like Majora’s Mask if it allowed you to play as an onion-headed weirdo.
