“Ghost of Tsushima: The Anime Adaptation Takes Flight at Sony”
Sony is developing a new anime series based on Ghost of Tsushima in collaboration with Aniplex and Crunchyroll, both of which are likely under the ownership of the PlayStation parent company.
The series is expected to be titled Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. As the title indicates, it will be inspired by the game’s ‘Legends’ cooperative mode and will include elements drawn from Japanese folklore and mythology.
The production will be handled by PlayStation Pictures and Sony Music in partnership with Aniplex, the studio known for hits like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling, and Sword Art Online.
This anime is set to debut on the streaming service Crunchyroll in 2027.
Sony acquired Crunchyroll in 2021 and merged it with the Japanese anime distributor Funimation to create the “ultimate destination for anime enthusiasts.” Aniplex was established in 1995 by Sony Music Entertainment Japan.
PlayStation’s transmedia initiative
This project will mark the first anime adaptation of a PlayStation property, but Sony has experience in the transmedia arena. Major PlayStation franchises like The Last of Us and Uncharted have already been transformed into award-winning HBO series and a Tom Holland-led action film, respectively.
Other titles, such as Gran Turismo and Twisted Metal, have received similar treatment. More adaptations are in the pipeline, with Sony recently confirming that films based on Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2 are currently in development (thanks to Eurogamer).
Sony believes its Ghost of Tsushima anime showcases the “creative synergy” among its subsidiaries and highlights the “adaptability” of its gaming franchises.
“Having already demonstrated the immense quality and adaptability of our gaming properties across various successful film and television endeavors, we couldn’t be more thrilled to announce our first-ever anime adaptation,” stated Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, in a press release.
“Ghost of Tsushima’s rich, engaging world and its fantastic Legends mode inspired by Japanese mythology provide an ideal canvas for this venture, and Aniplex is the perfect collaborator to bring Sucker Punch Productions’ acclaimed video game to life as a breathtaking new anime series.”
