Metroid enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating the vast part of two decades for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. The follow-up was formally announced in June 2017, and Amazon began accepting preorders shortly thereafter. Throughout the game’s extended development period, those orders remained intact. Now, even after last summer’s announcement of Metroid Prime 4, Amazon is canceling these long-standing preorders.
Perhaps this is an error on Amazon’s part, rather than something serious like another delay for Metroid Prime 4 or even the cancellation of the game entirely. GameSpot has reached out to Nintendo for clarification. At least one person on GameSpot’s team mentioned that his six-year-old Metroid Prime 4 preorder—which had been discounted to $48—was among the canceled orders just now.
Following the initial announcement in 2017, Nintendo revisited the status of Metroid Prime 4 in 2019 when it was disclosed that the earlier development was being scrapped in favor of a fresh start with Retro Studios, the same team that crafted the Metroid Prime trilogy. During the interim between announcements, a standalone title called Metroid Dread and a remastered version of Metroid Prime have been released on Switch. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption are both reportedly receiving remasters for Switch as well.
Aside from these titles, Metroid’s iconic protagonist, Samus Aran, continues to be a staple in the Super Smash Bros. franchise. But to stay updated on Samus’ in-continuity journeys, you might want to familiarize yourself with everything that has occurred in the Metroid Prime series so far. Nintendo recently reiterated that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is set for release in 2025, though it currently lacks a specific launch date.
