Despite the recent viral trailer confusion, Cillian Murphy will not appear in 28 Years Later – although he may indeed have feelings about the unconventional franchise somewhere down the road.
“[Regarding] this, we wanted him to be part of it, and he expressed interest in participating. He is not featured in the original film, but I’m optimistic there will be a Jim at some point in the future,” producer Andrew MacDonald shared with Empire. “Currently, he is involved as an executive producer, and I hope we can collaborate with him in some capacity for the trilogy ahead.”
In January 2024, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Murphy would serve as an executive producer and “potentially star” in the forthcoming 28 Days Later sequel. Following this vague confirmation, fans understandably concluded that the gaunt, zombie figure seen in the trailer was none other than Murphy. However, the emaciated, infected zombie is actually art dealer and aspiring actor Angus Neill, who was cast by director Danny Boyle.
“I showed my partner the trailer, and she remarked, ‘People will think that’s Cillian,'” Boyle told Empire. “I replied, ‘Don’t be ridiculous.’ I didn’t believe her. So I’ve had to eat a bit of humble pie since then.”
The new sequel, featuring Jodie Comer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, follows a group of survivors living isolated from the infected on a remote island – who uncover some terrifying truths when they venture back to the mainland.
