US Adds Tencent to List of Companies Tied to Chinese Military Connections

Announcement, January 8, 2025: Tencent has issued an additional statement concerning the decision made by the US Department of Defense.
“As Tencent is neither a Chinese military enterprise nor a contributor to military-civil fusion within the Chinese defense sector, it regards its placement on the list as an error,” the statement read.
“Tencent plans to start a review process to rectify this error. Throughout this process, it will engage in conversations with the US Department of Defense to clear up any misinterpretations, and if necessary, will pursue legal action to remove Tencent from the list.”
Original report, January 7, 2025: The US Department of Defense has incorporated Tencent into a list of companies it claims are associated with the Chinese military.
According to Bloomberg, Tencent has labeled its inclusion in the list as a “mistake”.
