Amazon Terminates Pre-Orders for Long-Awaited Mega Man Successor, Nine Years After Its Release

Amazon has reportedly begun to cancel pre-orders for the missing 3DS version of Mighty No. 9. You know, the game that was released nearly a decade ago.

To give you some background, Mighty No. 9 originated from renowned Capcom producer Keiji Inafune, who played a significant role in the development of Mega Man back in the 1980s and aimed to capitalize on its success with a sort of spiritual successor. To realize this goal, he turned to Kickstarter to finance the side-scroller for PC and consoles, with ports for the Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita offered as stretch goals that were successfully achieved.

Unfortunately, Mighty No. 9 launched in 2016 to mediocre reviews (at best) with no 3DS or PS Vita versions in sight, and its disappointing performance likely derailed plans for a handheld port. Now, according to one user on Bluesky, Amazon UK has started to eliminate pre-orders for the long-forgotten 3DS version that never came to fruition.

“Due to a lack of availability, we will not be able to fulfill the following item from your order,” reads Amazon’s cancellation notice. And you can bet there was “a lack of availability” for a game that doesn’t exist.

Keiji Inafune seems to have moved on to other endeavors since the nostalgic platformers launched, including a new Delusion Lifestyles game set to release sometime in 2025.

“After the outcry from numerous delays, it’s disappointing that Inafune and his team’s revival of their biggest hit is merely passable,” GamesRadar’s review of Mighty No. 9 states.
