Markus “Notch” Persson has “essentially announced” Minecraft 2.

In a post over the New Year, Persson encouraged his vast number of followers to suggest which project they would prefer him to concentrate on in 2025 – an old-school roguelike combined with a “tile-based first-person dungeon crawler” or a “spiritual successor” to Minecraft.

In the post requesting “genuine and honest […] feedback for once”, Persson briefly outlined what his dungeon crawler would involve, but then conceded, “but then I started to wonder if perhaps there are individuals who appreciate my work but may not share my fondness for retro nostalgia and would prefer me to create a spiritual successor to Minecraft, and I mean sure, I’d accept that cash.”

Genuine and honest request for feedback for once:

The new game I’m enthusiastically working on at present is meant to be an old-school roguelike (i.e. ADOM, nethack, etc.) combined with a tile-based first-person dungeon crawler (i.e. Legend of Grimrock (especially 2), Eye of the Beholder)

At the time of writing, nearly a quarter of a million of his followers have cast a vote, with 78 percent of them likely unsurprisingly favoring the idea of a new Minecraft game, even though he had asked people to “[please] vote with caution. I really don’t mind exactly which game I develop first (nor even if I develop more), but I do know…

A few days later, in response to users who overlooked his initial post, Persson recapped what had transpired, stating: “I essentially announced Minecraft 2. “I don’t particularly care which game I develop first (or even if I develop more), but I do know I’m creating one, so I thought I’d definitely be inclined to give it a serious attempt in the form of a spiritual successor to Minecraft and put up a poll about it.

“My goal is to be clear and honest about it, stating that spiritual successors are often more or less… … recycled ideas. Sad,” he added. “The problems I’m currently concerned my next game will embody anyway and aim to push myself to avoid. So why not consider the aspect that people DO want and are willing to pay me, in a sense, even MORE money for.

“I plan for the money to be spent wisely, but my goodness, how much have I realized I fail frequently. Success is failing until you manage to succeed.”

Persson noted that he had no non-compete agreement within the sale of Minecraft to Microsoft – “there was a one-year period where I couldn’t create a game with modifiable terrain or similar, but I was in the Maldives during that whole time, it didn’t influence any creative choices” – but did acknowledge that using the Minecraft name “would be extremely illegal”.

“Instead, I would create a new original game of the same type as Minecraft and title it something e
