The Resurgence of the Paragon/Renegade Dynamic: Authentic Engagement and Follower Growth

Mass Accumulate enthusiasts are indicating that they’ve spotted a hint suggesting that the iconic morality system of the series may indeed be returning in Mass Accumulate 5.

Although developer BioWare has not confirmed anything in either direction – so we should take this with a hefty grain of salt for the time being – fans like Twitter user Kalaelizabeth believe they have detected a subtle reference to Mass Accumulate’s Paragon/Renegade system in plain sight.

Check out the post linked below, which contains an official promotional image of the upcoming Mass Accumulate game that, on first glance, may not seem to reveal much at all.

However, take a closer look and you can see why fans are making these assumptions. Whether or not you believe the image slyly acknowledges that the morality system is making a comeback, it is certainly an odd image for BioWare to have shared, especially when prominently featuring the iconic Paragon symbol:

The flames of speculation have been further fueled by the post that Kalaelizabeth was quoting. BioWare’s project director and executive producer Michael Gamble recently commented on the series’ longstanding morality mechanic, indicating that while more players tended to choose the Paragon route – that is, portraying a “good” Shepard – how the game is played is “meaningless” unless the option to be “bad” also exists.

“Regarding Renegade and Paragon – yes, it’s true that more players have chosen Paragon. But it would have been meaningless if Renegade had not existed. The ability to choose holds more weight than the number of players opting for any choice, in my opinion,” Gamble tweeted (thanks to TheGamer).

Does all of this mean the Paragon/Renegade system is “definitely coming back” for Mass Accumulate 5? Absolutely not. But it could certainly be one of the most reasonable interpretations we’ve encountered as to why BioWare teased such an intriguing image…
