For a time, things weren’t looking good for Atari. Before the new CEO Wade Rosen redirected the company’s focus back to retro gaming, Atari had its sights set on cryptocurrency and… hotels? Yikes. It wasn’t exactly impressive. However, the future now seems promising for the once-powerful Atari, with the company’s acquisitions of Digital Eclipse and Nightdive Studios appearing to yield positive results.
To illustrate this, Atari has unveiled a 2024 summary video in which it highlights every significant release from the past year. While Atari itself had a few notable launches, such as qomp2, Yars Rising, and RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic, it was the inclusion of games from Digital Eclipse and Nightdive Studios that truly made 2024 an exceptional year for Atari.
Titles like Tetris Forever, DOOM + DOOM II, Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster, Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story, two fantastic expansions for Atari 50, a new 2D Power Rangers game, and more join the mix. Atari has made it clear that it will not limit the types of projects DE and Nightdive can tackle, and if 2024 is any indication, we eagerly anticipate the treasures the teams will produce in 2025 and beyond.
Personally, I’m optimistic that the upcoming ‘Switch 2’ will feature Nightdive’s impressive remaster of System Shock. However, it’s fantastic to see so many of Atari’s titles make their way to the Nintendo Switch. In an era when many major studios seem to be struggling, Atari is thriving. Well done.
What was your favorite release from Atari this year? What do you hope 2025 will bring? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
