Nier: Automata Surpasses 9 Million Copies Sold in Dystopian Triumph
As we near the eighth anniversary of Nier: Automata, Yoko Taro’s mysterious action RPG has emerged as a commercial success for developer Platinum Games, with the title surpassing 9 million sales.
A recent post from the official Nier Twitter account shared the news alongside an image of characters 2B and 9S, featuring the statement “Over 9 Million Global Shipments & Download Sales,” along with a heartfelt message to the game’s supporters: “This is truly not possible without you.” The game’s remarkable success positions it among, if not the most, prosperous titles from developer Platinum Games.
Despite the game’s notable critical and commercial achievements, a sequel has yet to be officially announced; since Automata, only a mobile spin-off and a remaster of the original Nier have been released. However, there are several indicators suggesting that a sequel might still be in the works, with series director Yoko Taro seemingly teasing a third mainline Nier game anticipated for early 2024.
Fans grew increasingly excited about the possibility of a new title later this year when series producer Yosuke Saito mentioned collaborating with Taro and Nier composer Keiichi Okabe on a project that “could be Nier” but “won’t be Nier,” expressed in an often cryptic manner.
It may truly be an excellent moment for a new installment in the Nier series. The ongoing solid sales of Automata, coupled with the success of 2024’s Nier-inspired Stellar Blade, demonstrate a sustained desire for games in the Nier style, especially when developer Platinum Games’ latest major title was 2022’s Bayonetta 3.
Regrettably, while the possibility of a future sequel appears promising, until we receive confirmation from Yoko Taro, developer Platinum Games, or publisher Square Enix, it seems that rumors and speculation will be about the best we’ll manage to obtain.
