Microsoft’s Gaming Future: A Shift Away from Exclusivity?

“All titles will be timed exclusives at best”

This year, Xbox has altered its strategy regarding game exclusivity, as the company introduces an increasing number of titles to PS5 and Nintendo Switch – and it appears that the direction has now completely evolved at Microsoft. We’ve observed the brand’s latest marketing initiative that labels most items as ‘Xbox’, and now Windows Central’s Jez Corden is suggesting that exclusives are pretty much finished for Microsoft.

In a tweet late last week, Corden bluntly stated that “Xbox won’t have exclusives going forward”. The Xbox reporter feels that “all titles will be timed exclusives at best” for the present, as Xbox determines when and where to launch its first-party games.

When prompted to clarify whether this was pure speculation or something more definitive, Corden didn’t provide a clear answer – however, the journalist did emphasize that Microsoft seems to be grappling with challenges at the moment. In short, Xbox’s “case-by-case” approach is resulting in a greater number of multiplatform games – especially if they continue to achieve success.

This may not be overly surprising; just last month Xbox CEO Phil Spencer indicated that any Microsoft franchise is now a possibility for release on PS5, and potentially other platforms. We will need to see how things unfold from here — given that these tweets are not based on any concrete information — but it’s certainly intriguing, and we do seem to be witnessing all of this evolve before our eyes.
