Alan Wake 2 stands out among a select few games that hasn’t experienced a smooth launch on Sony’s latest PlayStation 5 Pro. Discussed quality issues, fluctuating performance, and struggles with the console’s unique AI-upscaling technology, PSSR have all been highlighted. A recent update for the survival-horror game aims to address these types of issues, some of which essentially involve turning off PSSR completely.
Alan Wake 2 is the first game that allows players to switch PSSR on or off, reverting to its earlier method of AMD’s FSR upscaling when deactivated. Generally speaking, PSSR has been an enhancement over FSR (which employs linear scaling as opposed to AI-driven upscaling), yet Alan Wake 2 appears to be an exception. In their analysis of the game on PS5 Pro, Digital Foundry observed quality issues that FSR manages more effectively. However, they did acknowledge that PSSR was generally a more favorable solution.
