Chernobylite debuted in 2019, introducing a mix of views and a captivating premise for a 3D survival game infused with a touch of fear – it was created using 3D scans of the real-world Chernobyl exclusion zone. This suggests a fascinating approach from the developers, and on more capable hardware, the effort pays off, delivering an immersive atmosphere filled with hazy lighting and poignantly desolate ruins. However, on the Switch, the impact of the game’s most remarkable feature has, regrettably, been diminished due to visual compromises.

By far the most compelling element of Chernobylite for us was its ambitious narrative. The tale follows Igor Khymynuk, whose quest—to find his wife Tatyana, another scientist who vanished within the zone—is engagingly brought to life as he experiences hallucinations during missions and endeavors to piece together clues, culminating in a climactic assault on the Chernobyl facility itself, Tatyana’s last-known location.

No matter how much we tweaked the settings, including activating an assist mode, we couldn’t achieve a comfortable aiming experience. The on the FPS aspect of things—a crucial part of the game—proved to be mostly exasperating. We perished frequently, either aiming at the dull skies, or gradually adjusting our sights for a supposed headshot. Or body shot—whatever it took to keep ourselves alive.

It should be emphasized that Chernobylite prioritizes stealth over direct combat. You are not meant to engage in these firefights if you can avoid them. However, being stealthy often involves crouching and creeping slowly towards each enemy. This can become tedious, and you’ll find yourself tempted to use one of your numerous weapons instead.
