Square Enix announced at The Game Awards that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will finally see a PC edition released on January 23, with director Naoki Hamaguchi curious about how this affects the JRPG’s lighting features.
“I encourage the PC version of FF7 Rebirth,” Hamaguchi states in a post on Twitter, “due to the enhanced lighting. I’m eager for many gamers to enjoy this experience.”
More visually stunning sunsets are undoubtedly a welcome gesture for PC users; Final Fantasy 7 has remained confined to PlayStation for nearly a year, since Square Enix first launched the groundbreaking remake in February.
On the flip side, PS5 players are eager to discover where their holiday surprise stands. For months, they have voiced concerns about unnatural lighting affecting Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, frustrated by the fact that Square Enix’s patches have only worsened the situation.
“I’ve never encountered lighting this bad in Rebirth,” one disgruntled player wrote recently on Reddit. “Stepping outside feels like I’m entering Bahamut’s [nearly nuclear attack] Gigaflare every moment. Aesthetically, this game is deeply disappointing.”
“Put on your sunglasses and sunscreen,” advises one helpful commenter in another Reddit discussion regarding the same topic.
Thus, Hamaguchi’s positive acknowledgment that Final Fantasy 7’s PC release addresses its widespread lighting issues is hitting PS5 users like an asteroid. “PS5 should receive this lighting update as well,” one fan comments to Hamaguchi on Twitter. “Now that is truly abnormal.” However, to be fair, neither is the name of a person being “Cloud.”
