We have finally received our first official insights into The Witcher 4. While Ciri’s return as the main character of the RPG has fulfilled many hopes among fans of the series, there are just as many questioning how established lore will accommodate her role as a Witcher. Fortunately, it appears that The Witcher 4 will address this very concern.
“If you’re curious about how Ciri could embark on a path as a Witcher, well, the story of Witcher IV will reveal that,” CD Projekt head Adam Badowski stated on Twitter. “A huge thank you for the admiration and love for the lore crafted by Andrzej Sapkowski. Hugs!”
There are, of course, several lore-related queries that need addressing regarding Ciri assuming the Witcher title, not least of which is whether or not we will see a specific Witcher 3 ending made canon. While a minor detail in the recent trailer appears to hint that one ending is more significant than the others, lore expert Cian Maher informed IGN that the new game won’t “disrupt any canon or cause any inconsistency.”
During the same discussion, CDPR also confirmed that Ciri has undergone the Trial of the Grasses—an ordeal typically designed for young males. Considering the timeline of The Witcher 3, Ciri would need to be an adult by the time she completes this trial, significantly lowering her chances of survival—this has been a point of contention among those frustrated with her character’s role in the upcoming game. Nevertheless, her Elder Blood abilities may very well justify any issues surrounding this aspect.
“For better or worse, she wishes to pursue becoming a Witcher,” game director Sebastian Kalemba elaborated in a video that dissects the new trailer. “And the term ‘become’… signifies a journey, and I hope people journey with her.”
