Respected Marathon reboot director Chris Barrett has initiated legal action against Bungie and Sony for “purposefully damaging his reputation by inaccurately and publicly suggesting they had ‘investigated’ Barrett and ‘discovered’ that he had participated in sexual misconduct,” in order to evade a $45 million payment.

Barrett was reportedly let go by Bungie earlier this year following an internal inquiry into inappropriate behavior towards female colleagues. In legal documents, Barrett’s attorneys argue that his vulnerable employer “did not care that none of it was accurate; they had blatant reasons for their audacious plan,” merely aiming to “shift blame and divert attention away from their significant corporate failures.

“And to accomplish these corporate goals, they were ready to sacrifice Barrett,” the documents claimed (thanks, VentureBeat).

“Barrett was never asked whether he had engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct, whether he ever sent inappropriate sexual or pornographic content to a colleague, or whether he ever retaliated against a colleague for rejecting his advances or discriminated against a female colleague based on her gender.

“Barrett was not posed with those inquiries because he did not partake in, and has not been accused of, any such actions,” the documents continued.

Three weeks following the investigation, Barrett alleged he was dismissed via Microsoft Teams for alleged misconduct.
