A month after casually revealing the surprise that another Virtua Fighter installment is in development, Sega has officially announced its anticipated franchise revival to the public – all during a Sports Awards extravaganza that also showcased its Sonic Racing series for another lap around the track, plus a brand-new title from the studio behind Like a Dragon, set in 1915.

Starting with Virtua Fighter, it is fair to say that a new installment has been long overdue. It has been 18 years since the series’ last numbered entry, Virtua Fighter 5 – with Sega having revisited that particular installment through various remasters and updates since then. However, at long last, a completely new Virtua Fighter title is on the horizon. Details are scant at the moment – aside from the fact that it’s being developed by the Like a Dragon’s Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio – but more information will be revealed in a special VF Notification later today.

Speaking of Like a Dragon, Sega has also alluded to a new game from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio that shares some notable features with the immensely popular crime franchise. It’s a third-person action title with real-time combat set in an open city, this one taking players back to 1915. Once again, there are not many details to share (Sega is currently referring to it as Project Century), but at the very least, we know there will be more Like a Dragon-style action to anticipate when Pirate Yakuza releases in February next year.
