Next Up from Lies of P Creators: A Gripping Sci-Fi Survival Horror Experience

Lies of P, developed by Round 8 and NeoWiz Games, emerged as one of the most delightful surprises of 2023, and it seems the developers are already preparing for what lies ahead for the studio beyond a return to the Soulslike genre.

According to a report from the Korean news outlet EBN, which circulated on Bluesky as well as ResetEra, Round 8 is currently expanding its team for their next major endeavor, which is reportedly centered on an original survival horror title.

In addition to the forthcoming DLC for Lies of P scheduled for release early next year, the developers are reportedly transitioning towards a complete survival horror experience set in a sci-fi backdrop – not too dissimilar from the dark urban setting of Lies of P, but significantly oriented towards amplifying the scares and atmosphere. So far, details concerning this upcoming project, as well as the forthcoming DLC for Lies of P, remain limited. Nonetheless, it does indicate that developer Round 8 aims to build upon their success with Lies of P to create something fresh.

Upon its initial announcement, Lies of P attracted considerable attention due to its unique concept of a Soulslike game inspired by the Pinocchio fairy tale – featuring a protagonist that bore a striking resemblance to Timothée Chalamet. As it turned out, however, the game itself emerged as a captivating action RPG with an impressive ambiance, making it the closest any developer has come to capturing the essence of a FromSoftware game.

It’s intriguing to see the developers seemingly opt for an entirely new game rather than a sequel, given that Lies of P concluded with a teaser hinting at another reimagined storybook character. Still, Round 8 has gained a substantial fanbase since the launch of their inaugural game, and it will be exciting to see what the developer has in store next.

In GamesRadar+’s review of Lies of P, staff writer Jasmine Gould-Wilson awarded the game a score of 4 out of 5, stating: “Innovative, challenging, and delightfully dark, Lies of P maintains the core mechanics of similar action RPGs while introducing new surprises into the mix. The potential for deeper character development and player choice is enhanced by a haunting narrative that, even with some issues in certain new mechanics, solidifies the experience as a formidable contender in the Soulslike genre.”
