Although Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero has been available for less than two months, it has already established its reputation. As of now, this vibrant fighting game is the best-selling Dragon Ball title ever launched in the U.S.

Sparking Zero is expected to be “ranked third among all Bandai Namco Entertainment published games in history,” according to video game industry analyst Mat Piscatella in a Bluesky thread, as noted by The Gamer. Only Elden Ring and Dark Souls III have surpassed Sparking Zero’s sales within the Bandai catalog.

Even when looking at broader metrics, such as this year’s overall video game sales, it’s evident that Sparking Zero struck like a meteor in the gaming industry. According to Piscatella’s data, Sparking Zero quickly climbed into the top ranks of 2024’s list of the 20 best-selling games in the U.S., outpacing other notable (relatively) recent releases like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Tekken 8 by a considerable margin.

So, what makes Sparking Zero so exceptional? It’s thrilling, and undeniably vibrant, yet some of the game’s most popular positive reviews on Steam leave room for doubt.

“There is something terribly wrong with the gaming community,” remarks one highly upvoted, somewhat sorrowful “Recommended” review. “There are players who leave the game when a match is about to conclude just to keep their ranking intact. Is this fair? I’ve faced a lot of this.”

“As a lifelong Dragon Ball enthusiast, the game is enjoyable for a time,” shares another positive reviewer. “However, I wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t highlight that this game is riddled with significant issues like bugs, missing content, net code flaws, and consistent rage quitters.”

In our own Sparking Zero review, we found that Sparking Zero is quite engaging and certainly a delightful piece of fanservice. While it might not be life-altering, comfort in gaming is a valuable asset as well.
