Contemporary Studio of the Mass Lift Out Director Closes Prematurely Due to Unexpected Funding Shortage
Former Mass Effect director Casey Hudson revealed in 2021 that he was establishing a new studio called Humanoid, which eventually became known as Humanoid Origin. Unfortunately, the studio has now announced its closure.
“Earlier today, we notified our employees that Humanoid Origin will be closing down,” the company stated in a LinkedIn post. “Despite our efforts to shield the studio from larger industry challenges, an unexpected funding shortfall has left us unable to maintain operations. We’re devastated that we can’t bring our new science-fiction universe to fruition. Our primary concern at this moment is for our team, and we are dedicated to assisting them in their transition to new jobs.”
Humanoid’s inaugural project was intended to be a “multi-platform AAA title, centered on a character-driven story set in a brand-new science-fiction universe.” This certainly sounds like exactly what one would expect from the director of the Mass Effect series, but this new game was never successfully revealed – all that we actually received were a few concept art pieces showcased on the studio’s official website.
There are numerous new studios leveraging the talent of former BioWare developers to create new projects, but it remains uncertain if any will achieve the legendary success of franchises like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Exodus from Archetype Entertainment is currently in development and consistently releasing lore hints. The survival game Nightingale launched early access this year with its strong BioWare background, but developer Inflexion Games faced layoffs after announcing that the game “hasn’t been commercially viable enough to continue development at our studio’s previous scale.”
These are the greatest BioWare video games of all time.
