The introduction of mod support for Baldur’s Gate 3 has been so effective that developer Larian Studios is imposing a cap on the number of mods console gamers can use simultaneously.

Considering that excessive mod application is resulting in “sluggish loading times and game crashes” for certain players, the studio is enforcing a limit of 100 mods for console users.

“Now that there are over 100 mods available for download on console, we need to have a candid conversation. Who actually plays with more than 100 mods in a single save? As it turns out, there are a few of you,” Larian stated in a post on their official website.

“Unlike PCs, consoles can only manage a limited number of files simultaneously. The more mods you have installed, the sooner you will hit this file limit. Now that some of you have attempted to use more than 100 mods, you have informed us that you are facing slow loading times or game crashes.”

“While we advise only installing the mods you are sure you will continue to use to enhance stability, we are implementing a 100-mod limit for console platforms,” the announcement concluded.

This means that from now on, if you are on console and trying to run more than 100 mods, you will receive a notification indicating that you may not be able to load your save “at the moment”.

If you transition between PC and console via cross-save and have more than 100 mods, you will need to disable some active mods from your PC to load in and continue playing on console.

Currently, there is no workaround for saves that have already exceeded 100 mods, but a “follow-up fix is planned to enable you to restore these saves”.

For further information, a very informative video is available to explain how Baldur’s Gate 3 mods are curated for consoles.

Back in October, Larian noted 50 million mod downloads since the release of Patch 7 (which introduced mod support to the fantasy role-playing game). During this time, the developer reported that 10,000 of these mod downloads had been players renaming Baldur’s Gate 3’s enigmatic Undead character Withers to Bone Daddy.
