Revamping Xbox Avatars: Exciting Transformations Ahead in January 2025

It has been quite a while since Xbox Avatars seemed like a significant feature, and to be honest, we don’t often hear people discussing them these days. Therefore, it’s understandable that Microsoft is announcing today the discontinuation of the Xbox Avatar Editor.

On January 9, 2025, that application (which includes the Avatar design shown in the image above) will no longer be available. While it might have been possible to create an Avatar using the app, it will cease to exist, along with any items you may have purchased.

Microsoft cites “low interaction with the program” as the reason, allowing Team Xbox to concentrate on “providing other player experiences” instead. If you have bought any items for your avatar since November 1, 2023, you will receive an automatic refund for them after the Xbox Avatar Editor app has been discontinued.

“All Xbox Avatar purchases made from November 1, 2023, to January 9, 2025, will be refunded to your original payment method once the Xbox Avatar Editor app is no longer accessible. You can review your purchase and refund history here.

However, Avatars are not disappearing entirely. This is where it gets a bit confusing—the Xbox Original Avatars app will still be available after January 9, which pertains to the original version of Avatars that debuted back in 2008. These are still functional on Xbox 360 and specific games (such as Doritos Crash Course), and that will continue for the foreseeable future.
