11 Bit Studios Restructures Workforce and Halts Development of Mission 8 Console Game
The studio president admitted the title was “developed under markedly different market circumstances.”
Frostpunk developer 11 Bit Studios has decided to halt the development of its initial console-focused title, codenamed Mission 8, resulting in an unspecified number of layoffs.
The development of Mission 8 commenced in 2018, with 37 individuals involved by the end of September 2024. The studio estimates that it had spent PLN 48.4 million ($11.8 million) on its development up to this moment.
In contrast, a statement on the studio’s website disclosed that a recent evaluation of the project led to the management board of 11 Bit deciding to terminate the project. Studio president Przemysław Marszał noted that over half of the Mission 8 team will have the chance to work on other projects within the company.
Those affected by the layoffs will receive severance packages, assistance in securing new employment, and mental health support.
The studio is currently investigating how the resources developed for Mission 8 may be utilized or adapted for other projects.
“Our vision for Project 8, which was meant to be our inaugural title specifically crafted for console gamers, was ambitious and thrilling,” stated Marszał. “However, it was developed under markedly different market circumstances, when narrative-driven, story-rich games were more appealing.”
He further explained that the game’s development faced several challenges, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to numerous delays and an increase in the project’s budget with every milestone. The studio’s assessment of the latest milestone was the turning point for Mission 8.
